Expandable Baton: ASP Telescopic Impact Weapon

A law enforcement expandable baton, commonly referred to as a telescopic baton, is typically composed of a cylindrical outer shaft containing telescoping inner shafts that lock into each other from friction when expanded. The shafts are usually made of steel. However, lightweight alloy batons are quite popular with bodyguards.

An expandable baton is opened by a forceful swing/flick motion of the arm. The swing's inertia extends the telescopic shaft segments and then locks them into place. Telescopic batons are usually collapsed by sharply striking the tip of the baton straight down onto the ground.

Most expandable batons have a round solid tip to amplify the inertia during deployment as well as to enhance the impact of a baton strike when in use.

The most prolific manufacturer of expandable batons is Armament Systems and Procedures (ASP). In fact, many simply refer generically to telescopic batons as "ASP batons".

Supposedly, the sharp snap sound that an expandable baton makes when being forcefully deployed is itself very effective in psychologically deterring further aggression from an unruly suspect.

Many officers believe that they can project a better community-oriented image with a discreet collapsed baton on their duty belt than they could if they were carrying a fixed-length nightstick. And, the collapsible shaft makes it easier for the officer wear it while sitting in a vehicle.

The ASP Tactical Baton is a precision made telescopic impact weapon. The most popular baton variations offered by ASP are Steel Black Chrome, Airweight, and Electroless. The Black Chrome steel baton provides the greatest durability. The Airweight alloy baton features a 45% weight reduction compared to the Black Chrome version, but with 98% of the striking potential of steel. The Electroless baton is the most corrosion resistant baton. It is designed for high humidity or maritime environments.

Expandable batons are extremely popular with bodyguards. This is because expandable batons are highly portable and easy to conceal while also being extremely effective in offensive and defensive tactics. In addition to being utilized as impact weapons, they can also be applied as control devices to restrain somebody. ASP batons are standard issue equipment for agents of the U.S. Secret Service.
